MONROE — The Green County Sheriff’s Office on Monday named the Marshfield man who was killed in a three-car accident over the weekend, in which two other drivers from Monroe also were injured.
The crash happened just after 10:03 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16, when deputies responded to reports of a crash at the intersection of Wis. 81 and County N, in the Town of Monroe.
The victim who died was identified as Joel D. Lutz, 61, of Marshfield. The crash, which is Green County’s fourth traffic fatality in 2023, remains under investigation.
“Initial investigation determined that a Blue 2014 Ford Focus, operated by Ruby E Sheaffer, 17, of Monroe, WI with three juvenile passengers was traveling northbound on CTH N and failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of State Highway 81 and County Highway N,” authorities said in a statement. “The Sheaffer vehicle entered the intersection where it collided with a White 2001 GMC Sierra pickup, operated by Cory T. Bidlingmaier, 47, of Monroe WI; with three passengers (one adult and two juveniles) that had been traveling eastbound on STH 81.”
The first impact then caused the pickup to collide with a 2013 Subaru sedan, traveling westbound on Wis. 81 with only Lutz, the driver, on board.
The drivers and occupants of the GMC and Ford were wearing seatbelts and were treated for injuries.
All of vehicles sustained “severe disabling damage” and airbag deployments, police said. Deputies, along with personnel from Monroe Police Department, Monroe Rural Fire Department, City of Monroe Fire Department, Green County EMS, and the Wisconsin State Patrol were dispatched to the scene.
The vehicles involved were all towed from the scene.
