Stage combat, swordfighting classes start Sat.

MONROE - Monroe Theatre Guild will be offering classes in Stage Swordfighting and Stage Combat for ages 14 and up on Saturday, Feb. 4, 11 and 18.

Both classes will be taught by Stephen Eliasson, an experienced stage combat teacher who has been certified by the Society of American Fight Directors.

In Introduction to Swordfighting, students will learn the basics: how to handle swords safely and convincingly on stage, how to warm up, rehearse, and work safely on stage, and how to move through the world of the play as a character with a sword. Swords are provided, and those who participate should wear comfortable clothes, sturdy shoes, and a flexible glove for the sword hand. Classes are from 10 a.m. to noon and cost $36 for MTG members or $40 for non-members.

Introduction to Stage Combat teaches actors the basics of physical confrontation on stage. Participants will learn safe partner work with hand-to-hand techniques, how to fall safely and how to work safely on stage with a fight partner. Wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shows. Classes are from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. and cost is $36 for MTG members or $40 for non-members.
