MONROE - Sexual Assault Recovery Program (SARP) of Green County and Blackhawk Technical College in Monroe have organized a movie night in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month and the survivors of sexual assault.
The movie night will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 5 at the Monroe Public Library. The audience will watch the movie "Speak," and have a chance to join a group discussion after the movie.
The movie tells the story teen-aged Melinda Sordino who is sexually assaulted by an acquaintance at a party and the struggles that she goes through to cope with the incident and the bullying of her peers. While trying to adjust to high school, she also tries to grow from the experiences with the support of her art teacher and a good friend in school.
Refreshments will be available.
Melinda's story is not uncommon, organizers say. Many teen-aged girls are sexually assaulted every year. Every six minutes, a woman or girl is raped in this country.
Less than 20 percent of those crimes are ever reported to law enforcement. Only 10 percent of sexual assaults are committed by strangers, and almost 90 percent of them are by someone the victim knows or trusts.
One out of every three girls or women will be the victims of sexual assault at least once in their lifetimes. One out of every six boys or men will be the victims of sexual assault in their lifetimes. Less than 10 percent of the entire population will be lucky enough never to have sexual assault affect their lives. The truth is only 5-20 percent of sexual assault victims report the attack. It is an underreported crime that few people want to talk about or hear about and many have little understanding of. It is a crime that can forever change a survivor's life.
The movie is open to public and mothers and daughters are specifically encouraged to attend. Seating is limited; reserve a seat by calling Sinem Bertling at (608) 558-5486 or e-mailing sarp@monroeclinic.org. Following the movie, there will be a candle light vigil to honor and remember victims of sexual assault.
