WIOTA — The Wisconsin Historical Society recently announced the listing of the Daniel and Catherine Welty Barn in the National Register of Historic Places.

Constructed around 1850, the Daniel and Catherine Welty Barn holds a rich history within its walls. As a Grundscheier or “ground” barn, it represents the architectural style commonly seen among German immigrants in Southeastern Pennsylvania during the mid-nineteenth century. The Welty family, originally from Gettysburg, Penn., migrated to southern Wisconsin in 1848 and settled on a 13-acre farm in the Town of Wiota, Lafayette County.

“Congratulations to the Daniel and Catherine Welty Barn on its well-deserved recognition,” Rep. Todd Novak said in his weekly E-update sent out to his constituents. “The Welty Barn stands as a symbol of Wisconsin’s agricultural heritage during a time when wheat production reigned supreme. Its timber frame with load-bearing masonry construction showcases the craftsmanship of the era. As one of the few remaining stone-threshing barns in the state, it is a rare gem that provides insight into the agricultural practices of the past.”

Novak said the listing in the National Register of Historic Places recognizes the barn’s unique historical and architectural value, ensuring that its legacy will be cherished and protected for generations to come.
