MONROE - Green County Special Olympics received a grant from the Fred W. and Alice J. Kundert Charitable Fund, a component of the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin Inc. to support their athlete program.
The Fred W. and Alice J. Kundert Charitable Fund responds to the area's non-profit organizations wanting to start new, innovative programs or expand current services and provides the flexibility for addressing changing needs to advance the most promising creative approaches to strengthening communities. Grants from this fund strengthen ties between generations and encourages community participation in the arts, education, environment, health and human service programs and historical preservation.
The proposed project for Green County Special Olympics is to continue to provide sports opportunities for cognitively delayed individuals (age 8 through adulthood) throughout Green County. Agency 6-15 serves these athletes by providing training in and opportunities to compete in a variety of safe, secure and satisfying athletic sports, as well as providing a social environment for these athletes and their families.
During the 2007-08 sport season, 31 active athletes participated in bowling and track and field during area and state competitions. Thirty-five registered athletes are expected for the 2008-2009 season. The number of active athletes has almost tripled over the past six years.
The goal of Green County Special Olympics is to provide and expand opportunities for cognitively delayed athletes in other sports or enhance existing sports.
Acquiring volunteers and coaches is an ongoing project to meet the 4:1 ratio requirement of Special Olympics-Wisconsin Inc. which governs Green County Special Olympics. People wanting to join Green County Special Olympics as an athlete, as a volunteer for its many projects or as a coach for sport opportunities may contact Mary J. Flisram, agency manager, at 325-9225.
