MONROE - The School District of Monroe is accepting enrollments for its 4-year-old kindergarten program for the 2017-18 school year.

All children who will be 4 on or before Sept. 1 and reside in the Monroe school district are eligible for the 4K program. Registration is from Jan. 23 through Feb. 24.

The district has offered a 4K program since 2007, and it has proven to be successful, officials said. The 4K program is offered at several sites within the community and district. The following early learning agencies work in collaboration with the district: Abraham Lincoln Elementary School, Head Start, Monroe Preschool, Noah's Ark Preschool, Rainbow Childcare, St. Victor School and the YMCA.

Each program is facilitated by a Department of Public Instruction-certified teacher and is offered four days per week, Tuesday through Friday. Each site is unique in what it has to offer students; however, each site is required to follow district curriculum in conjunction with its existing curriculum to provide consistent early education experiences for all students who participate. Some sites offer extended daycare.

The community approach to 4K has helped the school district as well as other early education providers, according to district officials.

The district 4K program centers around a reading and math curriculum that enhances the most important way a 4-year-old learns through play. The 4K staff worked during the 2016-17 school year to align its curriculum to the Wisconsin Early Childhood Standards. Concepts and ideas are practiced through group and individual learning that has a strong focus on imaginative play, singing songs, dancing and movement activities and listening to stories.

To register a child for 4K, visit the district office, 925 16th Ave., Suite 3, located on the third floor of the Monroe Public Library. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. To register a child, bring a parent/guardian picture ID (driver's license or state ID), current immunization records, original birth certificate, proof of residency (copy of lease, current utility bill or cable bill) and $20 for registration fees (cash or check only).

Parents are encouraged to register before Feb. 24. On the enrollment form, parents can indicate their choice for a site. Many sites fill up quickly. Students whose forms are accepted after Feb. 24 will be placed in sites based on availability.

Transportation is provided to students, but not required. Contact the enrollment office at 608-328-7041 with any questions.
