MADISON - AARP will soon offer a new shorter and more focused Driver Safety Course to help older drivers brush up on skills, keep up with changes in road markings, and assess abilities that can diminish with age.
In January AARP will roll out the new course, which will condense the current two-day eight-hour Driver Safety course into a one-day, four-hour session. The class, offered in communities across Wisconsin, will focus on how changes in body flexibility, reaction times, vision and hearing, the effect of medications and other issues can make it more difficult for seniors to stay safe behind the wheel. Last year 2,791 Wisconsin seniors participated in the course.
"As of Jan. 1 the fee for the class will $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. Drivers can also take the course on-line at www.aarp.org/drive. The cost for the on-line course is $15.95 for AARP members and $19.95 for non-members.
For more information about the class call (888) 227-7669. Callers will be asked for their zip code to direct them to an answering machine where they can leave their name, phone number, address and county. A volunteer will contact them with information about classes in their area.Safety courses offered for older adults
