MONROE - Shakespeare on the Edge Inc. of Monroe is preparing to present its annual company production for youth. Drop-in auditions will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday at the Monroe Arts Center, 1315 11th St., Monroe.
Youth ages 5 to 18 might enjoy this fast-paced, fun introduction to William Shakespeare's "Hamlet." All youth who audition will be cast in a part. Non-speaking and speaking roles are available.
Rehearsals are intermixed with games, team-building and learning the play. All work at Shakespeare on the Edge focuses on positive self-esteem building in an anti-bullying environment. Participation is free, and youth from all communities are encouraged to participate. Shakespeare! By Kids, for Kids! is a modern approach to learning, loving and acting Shakespeare.

Shakespeare on the Edge Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2004. Its mission is to work on a common vision of respect and self-awareness through the works of William Shakespeare. The human experience is explored and acted out through the healing power of art and the transformative qualities of performance. The performance is about empowering kids to take healthy, positive risks, choose their scenes, choose their cast members and their costumes, do their make-up, direct their own scenes and figure out how far they can push themselves. It is about a group that supports one another, so that everyone can have the spotlight on the stage.
SOTE director Jennifer Bethel is an art therapist who came from a small, rural community and has lived in the Madison area for the past 20 years. She has a firm belief that the arts were meant for everyone, and she chose to make Shakespeare possible for youth in rural areas. She first began teaching Shakespeare at the Monroe Alternative Charter School from 2001 to 2004. Seeing the impact Shakespeare had on students, she knew that offering a Shakespeare project in the Monroe/Green County community could bring youth and teens together to build trust, break down barriers and bullying and help build a stronger community. Today, 12 years later, the Shakespeare Project has become Shakespeare on the Edge Inc., offering year-round programming to help youth find their potential.
The Shakespeare Project is another faction of the organization, in which youth and teens address abuse and violence through acting out the works of Shakespeare and using drama and art to address issues of self-esteem and self-empowerment, focusing on anti-bullying at all times. They work with the American Players Theatre in Monroe and travel to APT in Spring Green at the end of the season, which runs February through June each year. Youth who join the "Hamlet" production next week are encouraged to join the Shakespeare Project (starting Feb. 9), which works with the American Players Theatre on Feb. 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at MAC. The Shakespeare Project experience is valued at $1,000 per child but costs only $75 to participate.
