MONROE - Green County Aging and Disability Resource Center announced that July 16 is Disability Awareness Day, a day that brings a better understanding of people with various disabilities and their experiences.

The Aging and Disability Resource Center suggests that people can perform the following National Service Inclusion Project suggestions to help better understand people with disabilities:

• Read books and magazines written by people with disabilities; magazines include "Ragged Edge," "Mouth" magazine, and "Braille Monitor." These publications give a uniquely "for us/by us" perspective.

• Invite people with disabilities to talk to service groups. Ask persons who have had a disability from birth or a longtime disability to speak about their experiences.

• Include people with disabilities as service members, volunteer leaders and employees. Having people with disabilities in an organization can help everyone keep the disability perspective in mind.

• Learn about disability culture. The culture can include the history of the disability rights movement and how people with disabilities have been viewed and treated over time.

• Attend meetings of disability consumer groups, where people with disabilities take leadership roles.
