MONROE - Monroe Clinic is among the more than 85 Donate Life Wisconsin members and partner hospital organizations that will simultaneously host a statewide Donate Life flag-raising ceremony and moment of silence to promote the mission of organ, tissue and eye donation and to honor donors and their families.
The ceremony will be held at 10:08 a.m. April 2 near Prairie Creek Coffee Barista in the lobby level of Monroe Clinic, 515 22nd Ave. The time is meant to highlight the fact that one donor can save eight lives and will be followed by a moment of silence for one minute and 14 seconds to recognize the more than 114,000 patients waiting for a transplant. Of those patients, more than 2,000 are in Wisconsin, according to a news release.
The brief ceremony is open to the public. Suzanne Dornink, Monroe Clinic's director of surgical services, will provide a reflection on the importance of organ donations.
Donate Life Wisconsin created the inaugural Pause to Give Life event as a new, statewide observance to take place annually on the first Monday morning of April to mark the start of National Donate Life Month. Donate Life Wisconsin is a nonprofit alliance of organizations and individuals dedicated to increasing donated organs, eyes and tissues.
Anyone age 15 and half or older can register as a donor regardless of health, gender or ethnic or racial background. Nearly 3 million, or almost 60 percent of those eligible, have registered as donors, according to the release. More than 800 organs were transplanted and more than 700 people received an organ transplant in 2017. There were more than 160 living kidney and liver donors, nearly 250 deceased organ donors, nearly 1,000 tissue donors and nearly 1,200 eye donors in 2017.
To register as an organ, tissue and eye donor, visit DonateLifeWisconsin.org or go to a Wisconsin DMV Service Center. Remember to discuss your decision with family members and loved ones.
Monroe Clinic, a member of SSM Health, is a Catholic, not-for-profit health care network with one hospital and a multi-specialty physician practice with 122 employed providers serving communities in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.
