Monroe's boys basketball team is going to the state tournament in Madison for the third consecutive season, and for the fourth time in the past five years. The Cheesemaker boys won the Division 2 title in 2007.
The Monroe girls just completed their second consecutive statebound season last weekend. They won titles last year and in 2006.
And this is the second consecutive year both Monroe varsity basketball teams have played in the state tournament.
It's been an amazing run for Monroe High School basketball. And that's certainly worth celebrating.
It would be easy to begin to take these kinds of seasons for granted. After all, it's almost become an expectation that Monroe sends its varsity basketball teams to the state tournament, because it's happened so consistently the past few years.
But even for one of Wisconsin's most storied basketball programs, state tournament appearances remain something special. Before this recent run that started in 2005, Monroe had made the state only 10 times in 89 years in boys basketball. It's won state titles only twice, in 1965 and in 2007.
So as easy as it might be today to think of state tournament berths as a routine, or rite of winter, for Monroe, it is not. It's special, especially for the current boys team that showed few signs of postseason success in December.
So savor this run, Monroe. And go Cheesemakers!
