STOUGHTON - The Monroe girls tennis team lost a Badger South Conference match to Stoughton 6-1 Thursday.

"It's disappointing," Monroe coach Tim Walsh said. "It was a tough loss because I thought we played really well Tuesday against McFarland."

With the loss, Monroe drops to 1-3 in the Badger South in dual matches. Monroe junior Katie Demianiuk at No. 3 singles defeated Stoughton senior Kaitlyn Hendman 7-6 (9), 7-5.

"Katie played her heart out," Walsh said. "Her shoulder was hurting and she played like a champion and gutted it out."

Stoughton's Sarah Bendy defeated Monroe senior Chelsea Miller at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, Stoughton's Anna Nelson beat Monroe junior Eva Priewe in a nail-biting three sets 6-4, 1-6, 7-5. Stoughton's Gigi Barberino knocked off freshman Ashley Placek 7-5, 7-5.

"I'm really happy with how the two freshmen (Placek and Maggie Setterstrom) are playing," Walsh said.

The Vikings swept all three doubles matches. Stoughton's Payton Kahl and Kendra Halverson defeated Monroe seniors Erin Gellings and Paige Prien 6-3, 6-1. AT No. 2 doubles, Stoughton's Holly Brickson and Sydney Johnson defeated the Cheesemakers' Amber Jenson and Maggie Setterstrom 6-4, 6-4. The Cheesemakers' No. 3 doubles team lost due to injury default after Hannah Zweifel was hit by a tennis ball in the eye.

Monroe will host Waunakee at 4:15 p.m. Monday and then host conference rival Oregon at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday.

"We could easily be 2-2 and .500," Walsh said. "We still have a chance to get a couple more wins before the conference tournament."
