ARGYLE - Pecatonica-Argyle junior Cam Treuthardt returned from an ear injury, and he formed part of a punishing one-two punch that helped the Vikings roll to a
44-0 win over Kickapoo-La Farge in a WIAA first-round playoff game Friday night.
Pecatonica-Argyle senior Riley Ostby rushed for 170 yards on 13 carries and scored two touchdowns, and Treuthardt rushed for 108 yards on 14 carries and scored two touchdowns.
"We weren't being touched for the first 5 yards," Treuthardt said. "That is all on the offensive line. All of that was because of our line. They did an amazing job tonight."
Pecatonica-Argyle (10-0), ranked No. 2 in the Wissports.net Division 6 Coaches poll, advances to host Iowa-Grant in a Level 2 playoff game Oct. 30 in Argyle.
Pecatonica-Argyle coach Larry Green was excited to have both of his top two running backs back in full gear to showcase an even more diverse offense. The Vikings gashed the Predators for 378 total rushing yards.
"Any time you have two backs it's a lot harder to key on one guy," Green said. "Collin Argue did a good job for Cam when he was out. It was even more important to have him (Cam) back at linebacker. We are just a better team with him out there. We are a run-first team that wants to run the ball."
The Vikings defense forced four turnovers and that led to 16 points. Pecatonica-Argyle senior Kyle Emberson had an interception, and the Vikings forced three fumbles with junior Mitchell Dammen, senior Andrew Schild and senior Jesse Puckett each having fumble recoveries. Pecatonica-Argyle senior Will Herman had one sack.
"We had some turnovers and that is something we have to clean up," Green said. "We were able to force some turnovers on defense, and we were fortunate to score off of them."
The Vikings cashed on a six-play, 39-yard drive, with junior quarterback Logan Green plunging in for a 1-yard TD run with 4 minutes, 44 seconds left in the first quarter. Ostby ran in the two-point conversion to give the Vikings an 8-0 lead.
Kickapoo-La Farge senior quarterback Logan Cauffman had a 58-yard run that set up the only scoring opportunity for the Predators. Two plays later, Emberson got his hand on a swing pass behind the line of scrimmage and Dammen recovered the fumble. One play later, Ostby ripped off an 82-yard TD run and ran in the two-point conversion to give the Vikings a 16-0 lead.
Cauffman rushed for 90 yards on 10 carries. The Vikings limited the Predators to 167 total yards and posted their third shutout this year.
"Our defense stepped up and made plays when we needed to," Ostby said. "I think it (the fumble) set the tempo and took them out of the game. It was a big momentum play."
Ostby credited his offensive line for the gaping holes they opened up.
"Our offensive line did a heck of a job," Ostby said. "It's a joy to run behind them. They are just awesome."
The game snowballed from there for the Predators. Schild then recovered a fumble at the Predators' 20-yard line to set up the next scoring opportunity for the Vikings early in the second quarter. Two plays later, Ostby rumbled for an 11-yard TD run. He scored on a two-point conversion run to give the Vikings a 24-0 lead with 11:17 left in the second quarter.
Treuthardt then scored on a 3-yard run to give the Vikings a 30-0 lead at the half.
The Vikings went to work to start the third quarter with a 12-play, 70-yard drive, culminating in Treuthardt's 8-yard TD run to extend the Vikings' lead to 36-0.
Argue later scored on an
8-yard run to cap the scoring.
Pecatonica-Argyle now gears up to face Iowa-Grant. The Vikings defeated the Panthers 34-12 in the second week of the regular season.
"It will be a tough physical game," Ostby said. "They have a big line, and we have a big line. I think it will be a great matchup."
