MONROE - The set-up has been there all season. After winning two games and the title at Friday's Whitewater Invitational, the Monroe girls soccer team showed it's acquired the finishing touch Tuesday in a 3-2 stunner of Sauk Prairie at Honey Creek Park.
Monroe (3-6-1) handed the top team in the Badger North only its second loss in 14 contests. Catie Eiserman, who netted a hat trick in the first victory Friday, scored just 3 minutes, 3 seconds into the match as Emily Siefert sent a perfect cross left to right. Eiserman timed her run wonderfully and snuck a shot inside the far post.
Abby Schneider added a second tally 17 minutes later, as Monroe took full advantage of the wind at its backs. Not to mention the full-blown sails that came out of winning Friday's title.
"That was a huge morale boost for us and now the girls believe that they can finish in front of the net," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said.
The Badger Conference's top scorer, Elaine Gerry, got Sauk on the board with a goal in the 62nd minute. Junior Pam Lehman drew and executed the daunting task of marking the prolific scorer, who entered with 24 goals.
"Pam just stayed on her for the entire game, stopped her turning and truly frustrated her," O'Neill praised.
Renee Weeks got the equalizer for Sauk in the 73rd minute before a pair of breathtaking runs set up the game-winner.
First, right midfielder Sierra Neuenschwander took a clear and made off like a ball out of a cannon.
"She looked like she'd been shot out of something," O'Neill said.
She outran the defense until she played a picturesque cross, right-to-left, to Kylee Ritschard, who capped a crisp run by playing a perfect pass past the keeper Cara Ring.
Ritschard has had little trouble generating touches in front of the net but, much like the rest of her club, had unquestioned confidence Tuesday in putting away the Eagles.
Niamh Culhane-O'Neill made 14 stops in net to get the victory. After Saturday's Badger crossover match, the Cheesemakers hope to keep rolling against Verona at home next Tuesday.
