Darlington catcher Kennedy Wagner tries to make a tag at the plate during the second inning of a SWAL softball game May 3 at Seig Field in Darlington. On a squeeze bunt in front of the plate, Wagner grabbed the ball and turned to tag out the Southwestern runner, but Darlington pitcher Alyssa Tuescher ran too close to the action and collided with the runner. Interference was called; the runner was called safe at home and the batter was declared safe at first base. (Times photo: Adam Krebs)
DARLINGTON - Southwestern held a 9-1 lead over the Redbirds after the third inning, but a storm cell washed out the remainder of Thursday's game.

"We're not sure when we'll make it up," Darlington coach Molly Rice said. "The ADs have to talk it over."

Rice said early inklings lead to May 12 being a strong candidate, as Darlington will already be playing in a Southwestern-hosted tournament in Hazel Green. The game will be picked up where it left off, with Southwestern coming to bat in the top of the fourth inning.

In the first inning, Darlington starting pitcher Alyssa Tuescher held the Wildcats scoreless, allowing only a two-out walk. The Redbirds struck first on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning.

Darlington leadoff hitter Bethany McDonald singled to open the game and with bases loaded and one out, Lucy Heinberg hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored McDonald.

The second inning did not go as planned for Tuescher and Co.

Tuescher beaned the leadoff hitter Tasha Perjade who then stole second and third base. A bunt followed by McKenzie Myers, who reached on a throwing error. Two batters later with Myers on third base, Lanie Runde dropped a bunt just feet in front of home plate. Darlington catcher Kennedy Wagner grabbed the ball off the ground and turned to tag out the runner coming to the plate, but Tuescher accidentally ran into the runner while also trying to cover home plate. Tuescher was called for interference, allowing the run to score and Runde to be called safe at first base.

The very next batter, Abby Budden, smoked a line-drive RBI triple to the fence in right field. Southwestern scored five runs in the inning and sent nine batters to the plate.

In the third inning, Myers cracked a one-out triple. The hit was one of four in the frame for the Wildcats, which also collected two walks and batted around the order once again.

Offensively for Darlington, Taylor Crist doubled to lead off the second and was stranded at third as the inning came to a close. The Redbirds went three-up, three-down in the bottom of the third inning.

Tuescher will enter the second half of the game with eight hits and three walks to her name through three innings with no strikeouts. Southwestern pitcher Stacy Reynolds allowed two walks and two hits with a pair of strikeouts.

The two teams met earlier in the week on Tuesday, where the Wildcats won 8-3 after scoring five unanswered runs combined in the third inning and fourth innings.
