Squirt A takes second at state

BLACK RIVER FALLS - The Avalanche Squirt A hockey team traveled to Black River Falls in a bid for the Wisconsin Amateur Hockey Association 3A state tournament on Saturday, March 9, 2013. The Avalanche advanced to the championship round, where they brought home second place.

The Avalanche took on Black River Falls in the first game, shutting them out 2-0. Cade Janecke scored the first goal for the Avalanche in the second period. With one minute left in the game, Black River Falls pulled their goalie, and the Avalanche's Tessa Janecke scored on an open net.

In the second game, the Avalanche shut out the Reedsburg Polars, 4-0. Neither team recorded a goal in the first two periods, but the Avalanche offense woke up in the third. Both Cade Janecke and Luke Kuberski scored two goals in the final period for the Avalanche. Both of Janecke's goals were assisted by Anika Einbeck, while Kuberski's goals were assisted by Payton Stauffacher/Tessa Janecke and Tessa Janecke/Alyssa Knauf, respectively. Goalie Heath Bear earned the shutout.

The Avalanche took on Waupun in the championship round. Cade Janecke, opened the scoring for the Avalanche, assisted by Payton Stauffacher. Waupun answered back with a goal of their own. Hayden Roth, assisted by Cade Janecke, lit the lamp for the Avalanche in the second period. Waupun added two goals before Cade Janecke responded with an unassisted goal for the Avalanche, tying the game at 3. With one second remaining in the game, Waupun scored a goal, handing the Avalanche a 4-3 loss and the second place trophy.

Squirt B

WAUPUN - The Avalanche Squirt B team traveled to Waupun for the Squirt 3B state tournament on Saturday, March 9. The Avalanche went 2-1 in the tournament, including a 3-2 win over Marshfield in the consolation championship.

The Avalanche opened the tournament against Waupun. Colton O'Connor and Jayden Johnson each scored goals for the Avalanche, but the game went into overtime, knotted up at two apiece. Waupun scored in overtime to pick up the win.

The Avalanche began play in the consolation bracket with a 4-0 win over Waupaca. Scoring for the Avalanche were Colton O'Connor, Kendall Wild, Brady Smith and Ryan Molitor. Earning assists were Colton O'Connor (2) and Kaiden Klitzke. Aiden Runkle earned his seventh shutout of the year.

In the consolation championship, the Avalanche took on Marshfield. Ty O'Connor, assisted by Ethan Williams and Brady Smith, scored the first Avalanche goal, while Smith scored the second goal off an assist from Ty O'Connor. Marshfield responded with two goals, sending the game into overtime. The score remained 2-2 after one extra period. Ethan Williams, assisted by Ryan Molitor and Colton O'Connor, scored the game-winning goal for the Avalanche in the second overtime.
