REEDSBURG - Samantha Solberg was solid in the circle and the Monroe softball team clawed its way to a 4-2 victory against Reedsburg in non-conference play Tuesday.

Solberg, a junior, allowed two earned runs on two hits while striking out three and walking two in 5 1/3 innings. Junior Becca Armstrong finished, allowing one hit and one walk with two strikeouts.

Monroe had just three hits.

"We're still a little bit stale on offense, but we got well-pitched games from Sam and Becca and defended well with just one error," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said. "Offensively, it's still a struggle. I'm hoping with a day of practice (today) we can straighten things out and hit the ball a little better."

It figures to be a difficult stretch for the Cheesemakers if they don't. The Milton squad that handed Monroe (6-4, 3-1 Badger South) its first league loss on Monday visits Twining Park on Thursday. Next week, Monroe visits Badger South favorite Fort Atkinson, then hosts Edgewood.

"The next three conference games are really tough and will determine our fate," Buvid said.

Monroe scored two runs in the second inning on a wild pitch and an error, the only hit a single by senior Kasey Gutzmer. The other runs came in the third inning, when sophomore Kayla Updike tripled and scored on an infield out, and in the seventh on junior Heather Barta's RBI single.
