Redbirds run away with awards

MONROE - The postseason awards keep rolling in for the Darlington football team.

Darlington dominated the SWAL All-Conference team with 11 players on the first team, including Alex Erickson the conference's offensive player of the year.

The Redbirds had four players who were first-team all-conference on both offense and defense. Erickson rushed for 1,114 yards and scored 22 touchdowns. He passed for 1,240 yards and 13 touchdowns. Erickson was a first-team all-conference quarterback and defensive back.

Fellow senior Colton Hackett was the SWAL lineman of the year. Hackett was first-team all-conference as an offensive lineman and linebacker. Darlington coach Scott Zywicki was also named the SWAL coach of the year after he guided the Redbirds (12-1) to the WIAA Division 5 state semifinals where they lost 35-14 to eventual champion Brillion.

Senior Tucker Wiegel was first-team all-conference at running back, defensive back and as a kick returner. Senior Bryan Reichling was all-conference as an offensive lineman and linebacker.

The other first-team all-conference players on offense for the Redbirds included senior lineman Kyle Mulcahy and lineman Wade Black. The other players honored as first-team all-conference on defense included senior linebacker Tyler Hardyman, senior defensive tackle Joey Hull, senior defensive end Brandon Heins and senior defensive end Zach Brown. Junior Zach McArthur was first-team all-conference at kicker.

Junior Seth Rowe was second-team all-conference at running back and Heins was a second-team selection as an offensive lineman. Darlington senior Cody Erickson was second-team all-conference at defensive back and Tommy Notter received honorable mention all-conference honors.
