UNIVERSITY PARK — Freshman Tessa Janecke had a standout regular season for the Penn State women’s hockey team and has not slowed down in the postseason, earning multiple honors and breaking records.
During the regular season, Janecke, an Orangeville grauate, was named College Hockey America (CHA) Rookie of the Week six times, CHA Rookie of the Month four times, Hockey Commission Association (HCA) Rookie of the Month in January and CHA Forward of the Month in February.
On Tuesday, February 28, Janecke earned All-CHA first team and CHA All-Rookie team honors. The next day, the CHA released its individual awards, naming Janecke as the Rookie of the Year.
In 36 games, Janecke has scored 22 goals with a team-leading 24 assists for 46 points, breaking every freshman single scoring record. With these stats, Janecke sits in second on the team for goals and points behind junior Kiara Zanon.
Penn State (26-8-2, 14-1-1 CHA) began its postseason run with the CHA Tournament on Friday, Feb. 24 with a best-of-three-game series against Lindenwood University. In game one, PSU defeated Lindenwood 4-1 with a goal from Janecke.
The next day, PSU took it to Lindenwood, winning 7-1. Janecke recorded a hat trick, the first of her career. It marked just the second postseason hat trick and 15th overall in Nittany Lion history.
With the series win, Penn State advanced to the CHA Championship against Mercyhurst on Saturday, March 4.
