MONTICELLO - The second-seeded Monticello girls basketball team got a combined 37 points from seniors Alyssah Kubly and Courtney Leuzinger to roll to a 56-37 win over Black Hawk in a WIAA Division 5 regional semifinal game Friday.
Monticello (14-10) jumped out to a 19-4 lead in the first quarter and led by 18 points at the half.
"The first half was nearly flawless," Monticello coach Lori Brokopp said. "I have six seniors on the team and they know what it means if they lose."
With the win, Monticello advances to play at Argyle (18-6) in a regional championship game at 7 p.m. today.
Kubly scored a game-high 19 points and Leuzinger added 18 points. Kubly scored 17 of her 19 points in the first half and Leuzinger had the hot hand in the second half scoring all 18 of her points after the half.
"The girls played really hard," Brokopp said. "They were unselfish."
Black Hawk's Brooke Moore scored a team-high 12 points. Black Hawk junior Aleigha Sigafus added nine points.
Brokopp is looking forward to the matchup against Argyle for the regional title.
"I have really stressed the importance of getting out to a good start," Brokopp said. "I expect it to be a battle down to the end."
Argyle swept two conference games from the Ponies earlier this year. However, the Ponies got in foul trouble in one game and point guard Jordan Garrison played in just one quarter of the other game.
"I'm looking forward to playing them at full strength," she said.
Argyle 45, Albany 23
ARGYLE - When Argyle coach Kurt Ritschard made some adjustments on the press, the Orioles responded, cruising to a 45-23 win over Albany in a Division 5 regional semifinal game Friday.
Argyle led just 10-8 after the first quarter. The Orioles outscored the Comets 13-2 in the second quarter and used a 17-4 run in the third quarter to open up a 26-point lead going into the fourth quarter.
"I think Albany came ready to play," Ritschard said. "We just made some adjustments to rotations on our press and we increased our pressure on their guards. We took advantage of the transition game."
Argyle sophomore Kayla Butler-Paulson scored a game-high 15 points and senior Jozey Thoman added nine points.
Albany junior Sydnee Woyak scored a team-high five points.
Ritschard is looking forward to a regional championship game against Monticello. He understands the two wins the Orioles had in the regular season don't mean anything in the tournament.
"Argyle has never won a regional championship," Ritschard said. "To get this opportunity on our home floor is something we have worked hard for all year. They have a very good ballplayer in Alyssah Kubly. It will be a dogfight."
