MONTICELLO - The Monticello girls basketball team relied on its quickness to cruise to a 46-16 win over Albany in the regular season finale Thursday.

Monticello (12-10, 8-4 Six Rivers East) outscored the Comets 13-7 in the second quarter to take a 12-point lead at the half, 22-10.

"We did a good job using our quickness to get our hands on the ball," Monticello coach Lori Brokopp said. "I was really proud of the girls - we only had three total fouls in the game. It just shows how hard we were playing without playing lazy defense."

Monticello senior Samantha DeVoe scored a game-high 13 points to lead a balanced scoring attack. Senior teammate Alyssah Kubly added nine points. Both seniors Courtney Leuzinger and Mackenzie Zanow each chipped in eight points.

Albany was led by Sydnee Woyak, who scored a team-high five points.

Monticello will host Johnson Creek in a regional quarterfinal Tuesday.

"They are an aggressive team; they like to get in your face and aren't afraid to foul a little bit," Brokopp said. "So I think the key will be to not turnover the ball.

"I think some of our quickness will be key. Just getting the ball inside. We have a lot of different girls who can score on any given night. If they key on Kubly, I have no doubt the other girls can step up."

Barneveld 71, Black Hawk 34

SOUTH WAYNE - Barneveld senior Rachel Slaney scored a game-high 24 points to lead the No. 1 ranked Eagles to a 71-34 win over Black Hawk Thursday.

Barneveld (21-1, 12-0 Six Rivers East), ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press Division 5 state poll, raced out to a 23-5 lead in the first quarter. The Eagles made nine 3-pointers as a team and led by 12 points at the half, 28-16.

Black Hawk junior Aleigha Sigafus scored a team-high 21 points and had seven rebounds.

"This just shows the caliber of player she has; I have to think Barneveld hasn't given up that many points to a player this year," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said of Sigafus.

Barneveld sealed the win by outscoring the Warriors 27-10 in the third quarter.

"The first time we played, they beat us 82-17, so for us to be competitive for first half - only down by 12 at half - those are positives you can take away.

"We didn't come into this one delusional enough to think we could beat 'em; we just talked about being more competitive than the first time around and they certainly were."

Black Hawk's Hannah Herbst and Tatum Jackson each added five points. Barneveld junior Hannah Whitish scored 17 points and Sarah Cannoy chipped in 11 points.

"They just have so many weapons," Flanagan said. "They are the defending state champs. They've been beating Six Rivers teams by an average of 55-60 points a game."
