MONROE - After an offensive onslaught in their season opener, the Monroe girls soccer team battled to a close finish with Platteville Monday, April 8, ultimately falling to the Hillmen 2-1.
Platteville's Courtney Bowen opened the scoring with a goal at 17:44. Monroe answered shortly thereafter, as freshman Maddie Kallgren continued her hot streak with a goal at 24:09. The goal was Kallgren's fourth of the season.
After ending the first half locked up 1-1, Platteville wasted little time breaking the tie in the second half.
The Hillmen found the back of the net at 45:43, to take a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish.
Even though it was a considerably closer game than their 8-4 season-opening loss to Lodi, Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill was disappointed not to come away with a win in game two.
"I think it was a very unfortunate game," O'Neill said. "We dominated possession. I have to give credit to their keeper. She wasn't afraid to go to the ground. It was just one of those games where we had 30 shots on goal ... lots of one-on-ones against their keeper and just couldn't get it to the back of the net."
Junior Shyanna Kelley spent the entire 80 minutes in goal for the Cheesemakers, recording 10 saves.
Overall, O'Neill said she was happy with the way her team worked together on the field.
"I think they're doing better communicating and getting themselves organized on the field," she said. "We're still a pretty young team with not a lot of depth, but I liked what I saw there tonight."
Barring a rain out, Monroe (0-2) will look to secure their first win of the season on Thursday, April 11, when they host Dodgeville. The key to getting that win, O'Neill said, will be capitalizing on offensive chances.
"They've shown they can break through a defense on numerous times," O'Neill said, "and now they have to work on being composed in front of the goal and getting the ball into the net."
