Pec upsets Albany; BH, Brodhead keep pace

BLANCHARDVILLE - Some early 3-point shooting and a hot start propelled the Pecatonica girls basketball team to a 54-44 win over Albany Tuesday night.

Pecatonica (3-16, 3-6 Six Rivers East) raced out to a 23-13 first quarter lead on the heels of 3-pointers by senior Ellie Gifford and Michelle Francois.

Pecatonica coach Tom Wilkins said the Vikings played a solid second half to preserve the win.

Francois led the Vikings with 18 points. Pecatonica sophomore Lizzy Britt had 12 points and Gifford 8 points and seven steals.

Albany (10-7, 4-5) was led by senior Sydney Bump who had 14 points and eight rebounds. Fellow senior Hillary Best had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Courtney Pfeuti had 10 points and nine rebounds. The Comets shot just 26.3 percent and had 24 turnovers.

Lake Mills 62, New Glarus 35

NEW GLARUS - The Glarner Knights couldn't overcome a tough second half and dropped a non-conference game to Lake Mills.

The Knights trailed by just five points, 24-19 at halftime. However, Lake Mills dominated the second half outscoring the Knights 38-16.

"It was the tale of two halves," New Glarus coach Megan Scheele said. "We just didn't come out ready to go in the second half. We seemed like a different team in the second half. We just need to figure it out and get ready to go on Friday."

New Glarus junior Alycia Atwell scored 11 points to pace the Knights. New Glarus senior Chelsea Holler and sophomore Cassie Feller each added seven.

New Glarus (7-11, 1-6 Capitol South) hosts Belleville on Friday.

Black Hawk 53, Argyle 16

SOUTH WAYNE - The Black Hawk girls basketball team continued its march towards a third straight conference title and unbeaten season with a win over Argyle.

The Warriors (19-0, 10-0 Six Rivers East), ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press Division 5 poll, jumped out to a 24-3 first quarter lead and led 37-4 at halftime.

"We played well through three quarters," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said. "We worked for high percentage shots in the fourth."

Black Hawk senior Melissa Wellnitz scored 12 points to lead the warriors. Fellow senior Rachel Rygh had nine points. Freshman Jen Wellnitz and junior Chaesta Shager each chipped in eight.

Argyle sophomore Kayla Ostby scored seven points to lead the Orioles. With the loss, Argyle drops to 3-15, 0-9.

Brodhead 54, Big Foot 49

WALWORTH - The Cardinals remain in the driver's seat for a conference title after knocking off Big Foot.

Brodhead (11-7, 9-3 Rock Valley South) jumped out to a 14-8 first quarter lead and led by nine points at halftime.

Brodhead sophomore Taylor Douglas scored a team-high 18 points to lead the Cardinals. The Cardinals made 15 of 23 free throws. Brodhead freshman Carly Mohns scored 13 points and freshman Meg Duffield added eight.
