BLANCHARDVILLE - Pecatonica-Argyle senior Mason Holcomb shot an even par-36 at Yellowstone Golf Course to take second place in a Southwest Wisconsin Activities League mini meet Monday.
Mineral Point outdistanced Pecatonica-Argyle for the title by 13 strokes 151-164. Mineral Point's Simon Mitchell took medalist honors shooting a 2-under-34. It's the fourth straight SWAL mini meet the Pointers have won this season. Darlington tied Fennimore (189) for fourth in the eight-team conference mini meet.
The SWAL Conference Tournament to determine the champion is based on combined scores from eight conference mini meets and the conference tournament. Mineral Point (32 points) is atop the SWAL right now. Barneveld is second (27) and Pecatonica-Argyle (24) is sitting third.
"If Mineral Point wins all of the conference mini-meets they will be hard to catch," Pecatonica-Argyle coach Chris Holcomb said. "It will be a big hill to climb to catch up to them. That's why all of these mini meets are so important."
Mason Holcomb posted three birdies on No. 5, 6 and 8. Pecatonica-Argyle sophomore Ben Figi shot a 42 and senior Dylan Stietz and junior Jeff Saether each carded a 43.
"My top two golfers - Mason and Dylan usually shoot par or in the low 30s and Jeff if he is on is capable of doing that. I thought we had a chance. I think we have a chance (to win) every time. Mineral Point is strong top to bottom. I know we can play better than we ended up."
Darlington senior Brogen Evenstad shot a 42 to lead the Redbirds. Junior teammate Cole Roelli carded a 47. Senior Seth Johnson shot a 49 and sophomore Cody Crist finished with a 51.
Pecatonica-Argyle freshman Noah Krahenbuhl shot a 44. Even though his score didn't factor into the top four, Chris Holcomb is excited about the potential he is displaying.
"I have two freshmen fighting for the No. 5 spot," Chris Holcomb said. "Noah is new to golf, but he's a competitor. He's really coming along. He almost broke 100 Saturday at the River Valley Invite at House on the Rock. He has a really good swing."
Monroe finishes sixth in Badger South meet
MONONA - The Monroe boys golf team finished sixth out of eight teams in a Badger South Conference mini meet Monday at the Oaks.
The Cheesemakers shot a 365 as a team. Madison Edgewood ran away with the team title 308-332 over Milton. Monroe sophomore Noah Becker shot a 14-over-par 84. Junior Jack Rogerson shot an 86 and senior Collyn Wilde finished with a 92. Sophomore teammate Connor Allen rounded out the top four for the Cheesemakers, carding a 103.
Edgewood's Drew Arndt was the medalist with a 2-over-par 72.
"We have played this course in the past week," Monroe coach Braden Rindy said. "It was super windy today."
Rindy said Wilde was disappointed by his score.
"Collyn should shoot in the low 80s," he said. "If we are going to compete we can't count a 100 and we need a fourth golfer in the 80s."
Monroe will host the fourth and final Badger South mini meet at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Monroe Golf Club.
"I would like to think we can make up a few strokes on our home course," Rindy said. "I'm expecting better results. I want to contend with Fort Atkinson, Milton and Oregon."
