MONROE - Abby Oudinot suffered a knee injury last year that robbed her of a chance to compete in the WIAA regional track and field meet.

As a senior for Monroe High School this year, Oudinot is back on the track doing what she loves most - running and jumping.

Oudinot had a big day for the Cheesemakers in the WIAA Division 2 Monroe regional Monday. She teamed with senior Isabel Bazley, freshman Cammi Ganshert and junior Jordan Hirsbrunner to win a regional title in the 800 relay in a school-record time of 1 minute, 45.89 seconds. Oudinot also placed third in the triple jump by clearing 34 feet, 8 inches on her first jump.

"I have overcome quite a lot of hurdles coming back from my injury," Oudinot said. "It's amazing. I looked up at that (record) board since my freshman year. My goal was to get on it because I have a passion for track and field. I never thought I would get on it for a running event."

Jefferson outdistanced Monroe for the regional title 152.5-113.5. Brodhead-Juda took third (104) and Sugar River took fifth (73) in the nine-team meet.

Hirsbrunner was a regional champion in the 300 hurdles (44.51) and took second in the high jump. The Cheesemakers won regional titles in two of the four relays - the 400 and 800 relays. All four relays, including the 1,600 and 3,200 relays, qualified for the Division 2 McFarland sectional on Thursday.

Hirsbrunner credits her success in the hurdles to the zero-hour course she is taking offered by physical education teacher John Ditter that meets for 45 minutes a day starting at 6:45 a.m. The class focuses on developing quickness, speed and agility two days a week and incorporates weight training three days a week and nutrition.

"That zero-hour class has helped a ton," Hirsbrunner said. "I feel like I'm stronger and quicker than last year. My goal is to make it to state. If I keep running the way I have been it will all work out for the best."

Monroe junior Josie Eberle teamed with Bazley, Oudinot and Ganshert to win the 400 relay (51.29).

Hirsbrunner teamed with Bazley, Mya Waterman and Ganshert to take third in the 1,600 relay (4:08.06), which was about two seconds off the pace set by regional champion Jefferson.

Brodhead-Juda's 3,200 relay team of senior Amber Pickel, senior Taylor Bluemel, senior Cameron Novy and sophomore Cora Purdue won in 9:51.72. The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team of junior Allyce Fahrney, sophomore Sydney Mathiason, Waterman and sophomore Rachel Meier took third (10:32).

Bluemel was the regional champion in the 1,600 in 5:17.34, which was just ahead of Sugar River junior Noelle Marie (5:26.18). Marie won the 3,200 (11:38.74), and Bluemel finished second (11:53.76).

"I did what I needed to do to get through to the sectional," Bluemel said. "It's exactly what I wanted to do. I just wanted to be in the top two. Sectionals is the race I have to get after and work hard."

Brodhead-Juda sophomore Madee Harding won the 200 (26.12) and took second in the 400 (1:04.82). Purdue added a second-place finish in the 800 (2:20.69) for the Cardinals.

Eberle finished second in the pole vault (9-0) and third in the 100 (12.98). Junior teammate Alicia Kuester finished third in the long jump (16-91⁄2) and also qualified for the sectional in the triple jump.

Sugar River junior Krista Diaz took second in the 100 hurdles (15.19). Brodhead-Juda senior Blake Boegli took second in the discus (111-5).
