VERONA - The Monroe girls soccer team hung with Madison Edgewood, the fourth-ranked team in the Division 3 Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association state poll, but the Crusaders pulled out a 2-0 win Thursday at Reddan Soccer Park.

"We didn't have a lot of scoring opportunities," Monroe coach Kyle Kasten said. "We had to get adjusted to the turf and a very large field. Edgewood knew to spread it out. Edgewood knew how to play on that field because they practice on it. They are one of the top teams in Division 3."

Monroe senior goalkeeper Reily Pond had 17 saves. The Cheesemakers again played without junior goalie Anna Latimer and senior Kennedy Ludwig; Latimer's knee and Ludwig's leg were injured in the home opener against Oregon. With the loss, the Cheesemakers drop to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the Badger South Conference.

Kasten said he still doesn't know how long Latimer and Ludwig will be out. Ludwig was on crutches, but Kasten expects her to return.

"She's getting better," Kasten said. "Hopefully, in a few weeks she will get off the crutches and come back."

Kasten credited Pond and the Cheesemakers for coming up with plays to stay in the game.

"She (Pond) had some really key saves," he said. "She hasn't played keeper in a long time, and I can't say enough about how she has stepped in and played keeper for the most part."

Edgewood is in the same sectional as the Cheesemakers. Kasten is taking the game as a learning experience for his players.

"To hold them to two goals is a good game," he said. "It's really been a trying week playing Oregon and Edgewood in the same week and with the injuries. I think we can only learn some things from this game. They are in our sectional, and we could see them again."
