MONROE - The search for the next Monroe High School football coach will ramp up now that the Monroe school board hired Jeff Newcomer as the interim athletic director Monday night.

Newcomer, a 1999 Monroe High School graduate, has been a Monroe alderman since the spring of 2013. Newcomer has eight years of experience working in athletics, managing events and overseeing athletic facilities with the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Washington University in St. Louis and Bradley University. Newcomer previously worked as an inventory manager at Colony Brands. He got his bachelor's degree in health, human performance, recreation and coaching from UW-Whitewater. He also has a master's degree in curriculum and instruction from UW-Whitewater with a special focus on sports administration.

"I feel honored to bring my experiences back to Monroe High School and my hometown," Newcomer said.

Monroe High School Principal Chris Medenwaldt said the delay on the search for a football coach and conducting interviews was because the district wanted an interim athletic director in the fold to help with the interview process.

"The interim athletic director can help with the leg work for the interview process," Medenwaldt said. "The interim athletic director can check credentials, do reference checks and set up an interview committee with me."

Dave Hirsbrunner resigned as the Monroe athletic director Nov. 30.

Curt Miller resigned as Monroe football coach one week after the season ended, citing a need to spend more time with family.

Monroe finished 4-5 last year. Miller had a mark of 23-49 with one playoff appearance in 2012 in eight years of coaching.

More than 20 candidates have applied for the head coaching position. Medenwaldt said the school will start interviews later this month or early February. He said a teaching certificate is not required.

"It's strictly a head football coaching position," Medenwaldt said. "If the candidate has a teaching certificate we will see if a teaching position is open."

Medenwaldt said the school would probably interview a little less than 10 candidates. There is not a set number of candidates the district will interview.

"It depends on the quality of candidates," he said.

Monroe could hire a head football coach who could serve as the athletic director.

"It could be possible we hire a football coach that could be the A.D.," Medenwaldt said. "(An athletic director is) not something we are looking for in the football coach."
