NEW GLARUS - The New Glarus boys basketball team had their Capitol South Conference title hopes dashed in a 69-60 loss to Cambridge Friday night.
The Glarner Knights (11-11, 6-4 Capitol South) needed to win to earn a share of the conference title with the Blue Jays. The Knights trailed by 13-points at one point in the fourth quarter before rallying to cut the deficit to four.
"The guys were obviously disappointed in not getting a share," New Glarus coach Travis Sysko said.
The Blue Jays made 19 of 22 free throws including 13 of 13 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
"We got some shots to finally fall," Sysko said. "We just couldn't overcome their free throw shooting down the stretch."
The Knights had three players in double figures led by junior Tyler Kreklow who scored 18 points. New Glarus senior Braden Pittman scored 12 points and junior Chris Pickett added 10.
New Glarus will open regional play Tuesday, March 1 by hosting Belleville.
Black Hawk 64, Albany 55
SOUTH WAYNE - The Warriors used a balanced offensive attack to close the regular season with a conference win over the Comets.
Black Hawk (7-15, 4-8 Six Rivers East) had four players in double figures. Black Hawk sophomore Merik Meythaler scored a game-high 19 points and hit two 3-pointers to lead the Warriors. Black Hawk senior Michael Wolff scored 17 points, senior Christian Krahenbuhl added 11 and sophomore Cory Rupnow chipped in 10.
The Warriors jumped out to a 20-10 first quarter lead and led 31-23 at halftime.
Albany senior Josh Peters scored a team-high 17 points to lead the Comets. Senior Boomer Detra added 16 and freshman Isaiah Shell had 12.
Black Hawk will open regional play at Pecatonica Tuesday and Albany (4-18, 2-10) will play at Monticello.
Argyle 47, Pecatonica 41
BLANCHARDVILLE - Argyle seniors Nate Thomas and Ryan Geissbuhler combined to score 36 points to propel the Orioles to a conference win.
Thomas scored 13 of his game-high 19 points in the first quarter. Geissbuhler scored 13 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter. He did most of his damage at the free-throw line knocking down 13 of 15 free throws.
Pecatonica senior Josh Hendrickson and junior Wyatt Massey paced the Vikings with nine points each.
Argyle (5-17, 3-9 Six Rivers East) will open the regional tournament Tuesday at Juda and Pecatonica (4-18, 3-9) will host Black Hawk.
In other area action, Brodhead defeated Orfordville Parkview 55-44.
