MONTICELLO - Senior Trenton Ryan went 3-for-4 with two RBI to propel the Monticello baseball team to a 10-5 win over Barneveld on Tuesday.
It marks the first time Monticello has defeated Barneveld in 14 years.
"It's pretty exciting for our kids to get the win against Barneveld," Monticello coach Scott Smice said. "We got thumped by No. 1-ranked Pecatonica on Monday. I'm very happy with the way the kids bounced back."
Monticello (2-6, 2-1 Six Rivers East) scored three runs in the first inning and three runs in the fourth to take a 6-3 lead. The Ponies put the game way with a four-run fifth. Monticello pounded out 12 hits.
"I don't think hitting will be a problem for us this year," Smice said.
Monticello sophomore Andrew Eyler went 2-for-2 with one RBI. Junior Braden Gafner went 2-for-4 with two RBI and senior Zach Price went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Monticello junior Travis McCoy turned in a solid pitching performance going six innings to get the win. He gave up five runs on 10 hits. He struck out three and walked two. Freshman Kollin Klitzke pitched one shutout inning for the save.
Monticello will play a doubleheader at Cassville on Friday.
Poynette 7, New Glarus 3
NEW GLARUS - Senior Dalton Way went 3-for-4 with one RBI, but Poynette knocked off New Glarus in a nonconference game on Tuesday.
Poynette scored three runs in both the first and third innings to jump out to a 6-1 lead.
New Glarus junior Andrew Nimtz pitched 52⁄3 innings and gave up seven runs - just one earned run on seven hits. He struck out three and walked two. Senior John Chenoweth pitched 11⁄3 innings of shutout ball in relief. The Glarner Knights were plagued by seven errors.
With the loss, New Glarus drops to 2-7, 2-4 Capitol South.
New Glarus will nexct play at Lakeside Lutheran on Thursday.
