DARLINGTON - The Darlington boys basketball team had an improbable 31-0 run to roll to a 53-28 win over Mineral Point in a WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal Friday night.
The surge spanned from the second quarter into the third. Darlington senior Zach Brown led the Redbirds with 21 points. Senior Alex Erickson scored nine of his 16 points during the spurt that broke open a game that was tied at 12 after the first quarter and later at 18.
"After that first quarter I thought we were in for a battle," Darlington coach Mike Hopkins said. "It's certainly not what I was anticipating."
Darlington (22-2) advances to the Lancaster regional title game where the Redbirds will play Cuba City tonight. Darlington beat Cuba City about a week ago to win a share of the SWAL championship.
"I would like to have a streak like we had tonight tomorrow," Hopkins said.
The last time the two teams played, the Redbirds outrebounded the Cubans by 10.
"If we can repeat that we will win," Hopkins said. "I think the game will be won on defense and the boards."
