BELOIT - Monroe High School volleyball coach Heidi Witt has talked with her team about turning the Chees-emakers into a winning program.

Monroe took a step in that direction Tuesday by knocking off Beloit Turner in four sets 25-23, 16-25, 25-16, 25-20.

With the nonconference win, Monroe improves to 2-6, 0-1 Badger South Conference.

"We really don't think Beloit Turner expected this from us at all," Witt said. "This is how we know the girls can play. We were just clicking on all cylinders tonight. We had an awesome practice Monday, and I spoke to the girls about communication and how important it is on the court. This time we got behind our words of wanting to be a better team and changing this program to one that wins. It was time to be all in and play to our potential. The girls played with so much heart and determination. They deserve to win."

Monroe junior Alicia Kuester and sophomore Sydney Mathiason each had a team-high 10 kills and two blocks. Senior Hannah Vetterli posted nine kills, five digs and four aces.

Monroe senior Paige Murphy recorded 19 assists and junior Hannah Neuenschwander added 12 assists.

Monroe will play a conference match at Fort Atkinson on Thursday.

"This is a feeling we want to continue to have so we have to keep working hard," Witt said. "Now, we need to get our first conference win, which will definitely be a battle when we travel to Fort Atkinson Thursday."
