MONROE - The Monroe softball team closed out the regular season by splitting two games Saturday at Twining Park.

Monroe defeated Freeport 7-4 and lost to Fort Atkinson 9-6.

The Pretzels scored four runs in the first inning against the Cheesemakers to take an early lead. Monroe (16-8, 9-3 Badger South) regained the lead with a four-run second. Monroe junior Cassidy Pivonka had an RBI single and senior Kari Jordan had a two-run single in the second to give the Cheesemakers a 5-4 lead.

Monroe pounded out 12 hits in six innings. Junior Brooke Adams went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI to lead the Cheesemakers. Junior Natalie Dillon, Hannah Vetterli and Pivonka were each 2-for-3.

"We didn't get off to a very good start," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said. "We hit the ball very well. It's been better than it was a couple of weeks ago."

Dillon pitched a complete game to get the win. She gave up three earned runs on seven hits. She struck out five and walked one.

In the game against Fort Atkinson, the Cheesemakers had a five-run third to take a 6-1 lead. The Blackhawks rallied with a six-run seventh to beat Monroe 9-6.

"It was a poor coaching decision on my part to leave her (Dillon) in there," Buvid said. "She was running out of gas. It was a mistake on my part. We tried to ride her out. She just left some pitches up in that last inning."

The Blackhawks had three straight hits and Dillon walked two. That was followed by a Cheesemaker error and several more hits.

"We had just one bad inning," Buvid said. "We made an error that could have got us out of the inning. We give Fort a lot of credit. We just didn't get it done."

Dillon pitched 6 2/3 innings and gave up two earned runs on 11 hits. She struck out six and walked three.

Pivonka went 2-for-3 and Dillon was 2-for-4 at the plate.
