Monroe moves on to sectional by one shot

LAKE GENEVA - The Monroe boys golf team finished fourth place at the WIAA Division 2 Big Foot regional at the Geneva National Player Course to qualify for the sectional.

The Cheesemakers shot a 345 and qualified for the sectional as a team by one stroke over Mount Horeb (346). Madison Edgewood, ranked No. 2 in the state in Division 2, won the regional with a 320. The top four teams from the regional advance to the Division 2 Evansville sectional. McFarland finished second place (330), followed by third-place Edgerton (338).

"We had a bad round," Monroe golf coach Braden Rindy said. "It was bad weather and a lot of the scores were higher. We were lucky to get through there."

Monroe sophomore Nick Baumann and senior Matt Miller both shot a 9-over-par 81 for a four-way tie for sixth place.

Monroe sophomore Devon Boeck carded a 91 and took 23rd place and senior Eric Bush finished with a 92 and took 25th place.

Brodhead finished last (511) in the 10-team regional. The Cardinals were led by Lukas Tresmer who shot a 114. Senior teammate Dakota Walters finished with a 122 and junior Spencer Sowatzke carded a 124. Junior teammate Tyler Fenwick rounded out the top four with a 151.

Monroe will have a week to prepare to golf in the Evansville sectional June 2.

"We should be able to get out there and play a practice round," Rindy said. "It's an open course and we have already played it once this year. There should be no excuses."
