OREGON - Monroe sophomore Cam Shaw closed out the regular season strong rushing for 102 yards and one touchdown, but it wasn't enough as Oregon knocked off Monroe 34-18 Friday, Oct. 18.

Shaw had a 53-yard TD run in the fourth quarter as the Cheesemakers rallied to score 13 points. Monroe junior Mitch Swanson added an 11-yard TD run.

"He (Shaw) did a really nice job," Monroe coach Curt Miller said. "It's a positive of things to come in the future."

Monroe (0-9, 0-6 Badger South) trailed just 7-6 at halftime. The Cheesemakers were plagued by four turnovers (three fumbles and one interception.

"Without question those (turnovers) were costly," Miller said. "They won the turnover battle. The team that usually wins the turnover battle usually wins the game."

Early on, it looked like the Cheesemakers would close the season with a win. Monroe senior Charlie Kind returned a fumble for a touchdown in the first quarter to give the Cheesemakers a 6-0 lead. Kind also had an interception, which was his seventh of the season.

"He (Kind) had a great defensive year," Miller said. "He had seven interceptions and I think that is up there with the top leaders in the state."

Monroe freshman quarterback Tyler Elmer was 4 of 9 passing for 30 yards. Shaw had one catch for 28 yards.

The Cheesemakers were also plagued by injuries late in the season and had two freshmen starting along with several sophomores including one freshman and two sophomores on the offensive line. The Cheesemakers used four players at quarterback this season and had several players get key playing time at running back who will return next year.

"We had a lot of guys get varsity football experience that normally wouldn't," Miller said. "I hope this is a motivator for them to make a change and work in the offseason. Regardless of who plays quarterback and running back, I want them to work hard in the offseason and be ready to play football."
