MONROE - In what may be a preview of things to come in the Badger South Conference meet next week, the Monroe boys track team swept a double dual against Monona Grove and Stoughton on Tuesday.

The Cheesemakers edged Monona Grove 70-67 and outdistanced Stoughton 88-57. However, if the Monroe boys are going to win a fourth straight Badger South title, they will have to perform at the conference meet on May 15 to make it happen.

"We had tonight and the Monona Grove Invite on Friday to tune up and sharpen up for conference next week," Monroe assistant coach Ryan Dahmen said. "The kids know what the goal is next Tuesday. Monona Grove is our rival. Their goal is to win the conference championship."

Monroe senior Matt Bush won the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, .98 seconds. He also anchored the winning 1,600 relay. Bush teamed with junior Alex Barenklau, junior Nick Gross and sophomore Ethan Moehn to win the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:33.45. It took a strong finish by Bush to clip Stoughton at the finish line.

"He really came on strong and took it in the end," Dahmen said. "Bush's strength is he finishes strong in the 4x400."

Sophomore Forrest Klug-Hanson took first in the 200 (23.25) and second in the 100 (11.28).

"He had two solid races," Dahmen said. "He continues to improve his times as the season progresses. He will get himself in the mix in the 100 at conference."

Moehn won the 1,600 with a lifetime best time of 4:31. Sophomore Jake Hirsbrunner finished first in the 400 (:53.0).

Senior Bryce Messerli finished first in the long jump (19 feet, 1 1/2 inches) and sophomore Noah Thompson won the triple jump with a personal record jump of 36-2.

In the girls meet, Monroe lost to Monona Grove 86-54 and lost to Stoughton 103-38. Freshman Alyssa Dale took first in the 1,600 with a time of 5:58. Freshman Mackenzie Hesgard took first in the long jump (14-1).

"That's a nice jump in a place that has traditionally been a hard place to jump," Dahmen said.

Freshman Corlissa Robertson finished second in the 100 hurdles and tied her PR with a time of 17.54 seconds. Sophomore Lauren Werth, who has battled an ankle injury this season, finished second in the 100 (13.06).

"She (Werth) is still working her way back," Dahmen said. "She is getting stronger each race.

"I think she will be ready for conference next week."

Senior Mollie Bazley finished third in the 800 (2:34) and Lizzy Dale was fourth (2:34.6).

"They both ran PRs and continue to get stronger in that event," Dahmen said.

Sophomore Tre Voegeli finished third in the pole vault (8-6). In the 300 hurdles, sophomore Nicole Witt took third (:53.23) and Robertson was fourth (:53.34).

The Cheesemaker girls have battled some injuries this season, but are gearing up to have a healthy run at conference and in the postseason.

"At this point in the season everyone has injuries," Dahmen said. "We are as healthy as anyone at this point in the season."
