LAKE GENEVA - The Monroe boys soccer team entered a tough stretch last week, with five games in four days including two against ranked teams.

Monroe (6-9-1, 2-3 Badger South) has lost six of their last seven games and have been shut out in three games. They entered the Lake Geneva Badger Invitational Friday, Sept. 27 with a four-game losing streak. The Cheesemakers went 1-2 at the Lake Geneva tournament and lost a consolation championship 5-2 to Central Wisconsin Christian Saturday, Sept. 28.

"I knew it was a tough stretch," Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said. "I was hoping it would get a little easier at the tournament. In the consolation championship, I got a good look at Central Wisconsin Christian and they have eight players 6-3 or taller. Our guys were really intimidated by the look of them. It's a tough task to ask six sophomores and a freshman to go against seniors for a week straight. After that last game, our guys were run down from five games in four days."

Central Wisconsin Christian's Cody Zonnefeld scored two goals in the first half against the Cheesemakers. Central Wisconsin Christian exploded for four goals in the first half to beat the Cheesemakers.

The Cheesemakers got second half goals from Dan Tinoco at 64 minutes, 13 seconds and senior Taylor Teasdale on a penalty kick about 3 minutes later.

"They came out and outplayed them in the second half and made it kind of close," Vasquez said.

The Cheesemakers defeated Mayville 2-1 in their first game Saturday. Monroe senior Evoeny Kondratev scored a goal on an assist by junior Kevin Noriega in the first half. Monroe junior Matt Coplien added a goal at 36:12 on an assist from freshman Ryne Miller.

In the first game of the tournament, Grant Community High School of Fox Valley, Ill. beat the Cheesemakers 3-1. Monroe sophomore McKenzy Foley scored the lone goal for the Cheesemakers on an assist from Miller.

"Grant Community is a Division 1 team like Sauk Prairie with a senior team," Vasquez said. "We have played just one Division 1 team during this stretch and that was Madison Edgewood and we lost in the last six seconds. Hopefully, it will play off come playoff time."
