ALBANY - Cross country co-coaches Jim Ingold and Scott Moser rested the top five runners for both the Monroe boys and girls teams Saturday at the 25th annual Baertschi Invitational.
The Monroe boys finished fifth out of 12 teams in the large school division and the Monroe girls took last out of 11 teams.
"We wanted to train our top runners through this meet and give our other runners a chance to step up and compete at the varsity level," Ingold said. "There are still a few undecided spots on who will be running at the conference meet. This will help the coaches decide who will be competing in those eight positions."
Monroe senior Jason Koller finished 23rd with a time of 18 minutes, 58 seconds, followed by senior Brok Bertalot who took 30th (19:07). Monona Grove junior Reed Anderson was the individual champion (17:05.2). The Silver Eagles had the top three runners en route to cruising to the large school team title 21-73 over Platteville. The Cheesemakers finished fifth (190 points) and Brodhead-Juda took 11th (236).
"It's great to see both guys racing well as we approach the end of the season," Ingold said of Koller and Bertalot.
Sophomore Trevor Boll finished 43rd (19:26), Chance Nielson 44th (19:28) and Brennan Shelton 50th (19:47).
Brodhead-Juda was led by sophomore Jacob Staffon who finished 21st (18:53.8). Senior teammate Hunter Whitledge took 25th (19:01.7). The other top runners for the Cardinals included freshman Trenton Condon who finished 55th (19:52.4), sophomore Carter Urness who was 59th (20:02.6) and senior Luke Skoumal who was 76th (20:51.2).
In the small school division, Wisconsin Heights-Barneveld rolled to the team title 53-68 over Marshall. New Glarus-Monticello (112) took third and Albany was fifth (140).
Madison Country Day's Colin Green captured the individual title with a time of 17:36.6. Albany junior Josh Dahl took second (18:00.9) and New Glarus-Monticello freshman Connor McCoy finished seventh (18:41.9).
New Glarus-Monticello sophomore Adam Nelson took 12th (19:18.9) and sophomore Garrett Grossen placed 30th (20:19.4). Freshman teammate Joe Quaglia placed 31st (20:20.2) and freshman Rudy Wicker took 32nd (20:21.9).
Albany senior Logun Parker took 20th (19:55.4) and freshman Luke Johnson was 34th (20:23.9). The other top runners for the Comets were freshman Owen Baertschi in 36th (20:27.7) and freshman Clay Hulbert placed 48th (20:56.4).
The Monroe girls took last out of 11 teams in the large school division Saturday. Monroe junior Maddie Bartelt took 55th (25:11) to lead the Cheesemakers.
"It was nice to see Maddie have a good race after recovering from an illness," Ingold said.
Monona Grove outdueled Oregon 40-77 for the team title in the large school division. Brodhead-Juda took fourth (126).
Brodhead-Juda freshman Madelynn McIntyre finished second (20:43.4). Senior teammate Madee Harding took ninth (22:09.8). Senior Cora Purdue finished 27th (23:25.2) and sophomore Carissa Purdue placed 42nd (24:23.5). Senior Morgan Tresemer placed 46th (24:42.6) to round out the top five for the Cardinals.
"Like the boys' team, there are still a few girls competing for the last varsity spots for conference," Ingold said.
In the small school division, Wisconsin Heights-Barneveld edged Albany for the title 55-65. New Glarus-Monticello took eighth (213) out of 10 teams. Stateline Home School's Havilah Pfarr won the race with a time of 20:13.6.

New Glarus-Monticello senior Gabby Whisler took 17th (23:31.4) and sophomore Molly Molencamp finished 31st (24:35.6) to lead the Knights. Junior teammate Libbie Melvin placed 54th (29:06.5) and junior Emily Stiff finished 55th (29:29). Freshman Samantha Burgess ran to a 56th-place finish (31:49.9) to round out the top five for the Knights.
Monroe will run in the Badger South Conference meet Saturday in Watertown.
