Milton's motor can't be slowed by shorthanded Monroe

MILTON - Cory Kundert can proudly say he stood up to a steamroller.

While the Monroe High School junior-to-be lost the lopsided game of chicken Wednesday night, he kept taking the ball on the hill for the Monroe Senior Legion club in a 13-2, five-inning loss at Milton.

Monroe (0-2) was missing three starters and Milton (3-0), in Monroe skipper Bruce Rear's eyes, is too talented for a shorthanded club to keep pace.

"You could tell they're older than us and a few of them have college experience," Rear said. "I don't expect them to lose many games in the league."

Nate Barta and Mike Rear both had two hits for Monroe, while Milton went on a 16-hit parade.

Sean McCann struck out eight batters over four innings for Milton, which got the first two runs of a back-breaking seven-run fourth inning in unearned fashion.

Worse yet, it was a crushing counterpunch after Monroe cut the deficit to four runs with two tallies in the top of the fourth inning to make the score 6-2.
