SPRING GREEN - Monroe senior Matt Miller recently got a new driver and he has been a in a groove hitting tee shots since.

Miller used his new driver to his advantage to win a playoff to finish first place in the Badger South Conference shooting a 77 at the House on the Rock Golf Course Wednesday. Miller was tied at 77 after the round with three other golfers and was forced to play a four-man playoff. Miller and Fort Atkinson's No. 1 player both had a par on No. 18 to start the playoff. On the second playoff hole, No. 10, Miller finished with a par and Fort Atkinson's top golfer bogeyed after missing a putt for par that would have tied Miller for the third time.

"He (Miller) outlasted them," Monroe coach Braden Rindy said. "He's a consistent golfer. He got a new driver. Every time he hit a tee shot he just killed it."

Monroe shot a 341 and finished fifth place out of seven teams in the Badger South. Madison Edgewood, which is ranked No. 2 in the Division 2 Wisconsin Golf Coaches Association state poll, shot a 315 to win the Badger South Conference championship. The Crusaders were also the overall conference champions ahead of runner-up Waunakee (318), third-place Mount Horeb (319) and fourth-place Oregon (320).

Monroe sophomore Nick Baumann shot an 83 and junior teammate Tanner Thompson carded an 89. Monroe sophomore Devon Boeck finished with a 92. Both Miller and Baumann were named first-team all-conference based on their scores in conference dual matches combined with the conference tournament results. Baumann finished fourth and Miller was seventh as both garnered all-conference accolades.

The Cheesemakers were looking forward to contending for a top three finish.

"Everyone has to play well at the same time," Rindy said. "We haven't all got hot at the same time. Hopefully, we will at regionals."

Monroe will play in a WIAA Division 2 Lake Geneva regional at Geneva National Player Course May 26. The top four teams from the regional advance to the sectional. The Cheesemakers are looking to qualify for the sectional as a team for the second straight year.

Rindy said Edgewood is the favorite to win the regional and Monroe will be contending with Lodi, River Valley and Big Foot for a sectional berth.
