Meritt, Schaefer lead MAST against Evansville

MONROE - Emily Meritt, 14, had a hand in five events wins for the Monroe Area Swim Team in a dual meet against Evansville on Wednesday.

Despite the solid production from several swimmers, Monroe lost to Evansville 925-505 at the Monroe City Pool at Recreation Park.

Meritt won three individual races: the girls 13- and 14-year-old 100-meter freestyle (1 minute, 25.32 seconds), the 50 freestyle (38.58) and the 50 butterfly (44.83). Elsa Schaefer, Norma Parr and Kayleigh Nesbitt had a hand in winning four events for the Monroe Area Swim Team.

Nesbitt, 13, won the girls 13-14 200 individual medley (4:02.57) and the 50 backstroke (52.62).

Meritt and Nesbitt teamed with Cassi Gersbach and Alisha Bennett to win the 200 medley relay (3:21.10), which finished about eight seconds ahead of Evansville. Meritt and Nesbitt teamed with Gersbach and Grace Schrenk to win the 200 freestyle relay (2:47.89).

Gersbach added a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle (40.98) to help Monroe sweep the top two spots.

Schaefer, 11, won three individual events: the girls 11-12 200 IM (3:56.47), the 50 freestyle (44.74) and 50 breaststroke (51.38). Schaefer teamed with Ava Scace and Taylor Rufer to win the 200 freestyle relay (3:12.48).

Scace added a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle (1:45.49). Rufer added second-place finishes in the 100 freestyle (146.9), the 50 freestyle (46.75) and 50 backstroke (1:24.31).

Parr, 10, won the girls 9-10 50 freestyle (56.4), the 100 freestyle (1:57.69) and the 50 butterfly (1:03.65). Parr combined with Emily Sutter, Mya Scace, Kristina Foley to finish first in the 200 freestyle relay (4:16.84). Mya Scace placed second in the 50 backstroke (1:13.95).

In the girls 8-and-younger division, Anna Zentner, 7, won the 50 freestyle (1:03.84) and the 25 freestyle (28.75).

Zentner combined with Megan Chapman, Aubrie Voegeli and Brinlee Chapman to win the 100 medley relay (2:41.83). The same quartet won the 100 freestyle relay (2:45.53). Voegeli finished first in the 25 backstroke (35.58). Foley, 8, took second in the 25 backstroke (37.41) and second in the 25 breaststroke (38.20).

In the boys competition, Landon Knobel, 13, won three individual events including the 13-14 100 freestyle (1:32.76), the 50 butterfly (53.75) and the 50 breaststroke (1:00.60). Teagan Knobel, 8, won two individual events in the 8-and-younger division: the 25 backstroke (37.94) and the 25 breaststroke (40.99). He added a second-place finish in the 25 freestyle (36.13). Eli Schaefer, 7, added a second-place finish in the 25 breaststroke (54.94).
