MONROE - The Monroe girls tennis team lost a non-conference dual match to McFarland 6-1 Monday, Sept. 30.

Monroe seniors Ellie Grossen and Chandra McGuire at No. 1 doubles defeated McFarland's Sarah Ali and Sabrina Filmore 6-4, 6-2. It was the only win for the Cheese-makers and came on the heels of Grossen and McGuire finishing fourth place at the Badger Conference tournament at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium Saturday, Sept. 28.

"What can I say other than we lost to a team that is better than us," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "At most positions, they just plain hit better shots and executed their game plan better than we did."

McFarland's Megan Speich defeated Monroe senior Allie Coplien at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2 singles, McFarland's Chelsea Miller 6-4, 6-1. McFarland's Jackie Silvis at No. 3 singles beat Monroe sophomore Eva Priewe 6-3, 6-3 and Shelby Riese at No. 4 singles defeated Monroe sophomore Katie Demianiuk 6-3, 6-0.

At No. 2 doubles, McFarland's Raina Richardson and Melanie Aust beat Monroe juniors Paige Prien and Erin Gellings 6-1, 6-0.

The Spartans' No. 3 doubles team of Elena DiVita and Natalie Robb defeated the Cheesemakers' Alisa Fager and Amber Jenson 6-4, 6-1.

Monroe now gears up for the Madison Edgewood subsectional at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7 at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
