Mat Rats start strong

MONROE - The Monroe Mat Rats' season is under way, with several wrestlers travelling to different area tournaments during the holidays.

With practices starting tonight, some of this year's Mat Rats started their seasons with no practice at all.

On Dec. 27, four wrestlers participated in a tournament in Lena, Ill.

Cole Miller finished in first place in the third- and fourth-grade division, and Tyler Davis finished second in the fifth- and sixth-grade division. In the seventh- and eighth-grade division, Dusty Burkhalter and Kevin Klopfenstein finished first and second, respectively.

Drake and Parker Ingold placed in a Dec. 28 tournament in Sun Prairie. Monroe finished in third place as a team, with Parker taking third place in the third- and fourth-grade division. Drake finished in fourth place in the same division.

On Saturday, a slew of Monroe wrestlers placed at a tournament in Darlington.

Cole Murray again finished in first place in his division, with Hayden Arneson taking second.

Trevor Gorr won the seventh- and eighth-grade division with Dusty Burkhalter (second place) and Troy Gorr (fourth) each gaining honors in the same division.

Traiten Gorr finished in second place in the fifth- and sixth-grade division and Patrick Rielly took third place in the kindergarten-second-grade division.

On Sunday, Monroe Mat Rats traveled to three locations. Reave Lincoln finished in first place in the seventh- and eighth-grade division in a tournament in Cambridge.

Drake and Parker Ingold finished in first and second place in a tournament at Stoughton, where Aaron Hesgard also took second place in the seventh- and eighth-grade division.

Kevin Klopfenstein took second place at an eight-man tournament in Crystal Lake, Ill.
