BLANCHARDVILLE — Pecatonica-Argyle lost its season-opening game to Six Rivers rival Potosi-Cassville Sept. 25, 42-7.
The Vikings were pinned deep on their first possession, and a short punt gave the Chieftains the ball at the Pec-Argyle 31. The visitor initially scored on the eighth play of the drive, only to be called back for a penalty. On the next snap, Potosi-Cassville scored anyway as quarterback Levi Groom threw a swing pass to Ashton Spitzack for a score with 4:33 left in the first quarter.
Potosi added two more scored in the second quarter, taking a 21-0 lead into halftime. The third quarter continued to be much of the same, as the Chieftains scored twice more to start the running clock, and made it 42-0 in the fourth quarter.
Pecatonica-Argyle finally punched in a score with 3:21 left in the fourth quarter as Vikings running back Clay Ritschard punched in his team’s first score of the season on a dive up the middle to make it 35-7 with 3:21 left in the game. Potosi made it a 35-point game on the ensuing kickoff as Preston Steiner housed the kickoff from 75 yards away.
Groom finished with 153 yards through the air on 10 of 12 passing with three touchdowns. The Chieftains added another 174 yards on the ground.
Up next for the Vikings is an Oct. 2 home game against Boscobel, which lost 43-0 to Onalaska Luther in its season opener.
