Saunders snags second
tennis stock

MADISON — Junior Wes Saunders represented Monroe in the Badger Conference Tournament on Friday and Saturday, May 19-20. The No. 2 singles player was the only Cheesemaker to advance to day two, where he took second. 

As the No. 2 seed, Saunders drew No. 15-seeded Christian Zastrow from Watertown in the first round. He advanced to the second round with a 6-1, 6-2 win. There, he defeated No. 10-seeded Simon Wenniger of Reedsburg 6-1, 6-0. Saunders and Hadley Jones of DeForest, seeded No. 3, went three sets. Saunders prevailed 2-6, 6-3, 10-6. In the championship. Saunders fell to Nicholas Schaefer of Oregon 6-1, 6-3. Earlier this season, Schaefer defeated Saunders 6-0, 6-0. 

No. 1 singles player Matthew Setterstrom made it to the second round with a 7-6 (7), 6-0 win over Jameson Stocks of Watertown. Setterstrom then fell to No. 1-seeded Mark Mille of Edgewood 6-0, 6-4. Miller defeated Setterstrom earlier this season 6-1, 6-3.

Gavin Eckerman faced the same fate as Setterstrom at No. 3 singles. After a first-round win over Caleb Fast of Fort Atkinson-Cambridge 6-3, 6-2, he fell to No. 1 seeded Samuel Halverson in three sets, 6-7 (8), 6-2, 10-3. The pair played a three-set match earlier in the season, too. 

No. 15 seed Clayton Waski drew No. 2 seed Taite Thomas of Monona Grove in the first round. He fell 6-1, 6-4.

No. 1 doubles Ryan Mathiason and Max Petitjean won the first round against Grady Saalsaa and Enzo Rostamo of Portage 6-1, 6-0. They fell in the second round to Will Davies and George Stelling of Baraboo in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 10-6. 

Mitchell Ferguson and Louis Armstrong lost in the first round of the No. 3 doubles bracket 7-5, 6-3. They faced No. 7 seeded Riley Doyle and Alex Wittnebel of Beaver Dam.

No. 3 doubles duo of Trey Wyss and Brandon Bassett edged No. 9-seeded Daniel Knoploh and Alex Espasandin of Stoughton 6-4, 6-4 in the first round. They faced No. 1-seeded Charle Zimbric and Louis Zimbric in the second round, losing 6-1, 6-2.
