Raiders notch win; MHS loses

DODGEVILLE — The Sugar River Raiders opened their season with a 1-0 victory at Dodgeville Aug. 27. 

In the fourth minute of the game, Breckin Faber put one past the Dodgers goalkeeper off a free kick pass from Charlie Douma.

The Raiders would put 22 shots on goal in the game, while Sugar River goalie Julian Lutz made eight saves on his own.

Sugar River (1-0) was set to travel to Beaver Dam Aug. 29 before playing more than three road games the following week: at Evansville Sept. 3, Columbus Sept. 5, and the Big Foot Invitational Sept. 7. The Raiders’ home opener is Sept. 10 against Lake Mills.


Poynette-Portage 6, Monroe 1

POYNETTE — Aaron Ziolkowski scored Monroe’s first goal of the season, but the Cheesemakers struggled in the second half in an eventual loss to Poynette-Portage in the regular season opener Aug. 27.

Monroe put seven shots on goal, but could only bang home the one. Julio Vasquez played goalie the entire game, making nine saves.

Monroe (0-1) was set to host Dodgeville Aug. 29 and has a pair of road games coming up: Sept. 3 at Edgerton and Sept. 5 at Platteville.
