Orioles capture first regional
Senior Grace Ganshert just six points from 1,000
basketball

ARGYLE — For the first time in school history, the Orioles are regional champions in girls basketball.

On Feb. 25, underdog Argyle knocked off higher-seed Fall River 60-48, and the following night emphatically dropped Burlington Catholic Memorial 61-30 in a WIAA Division 5 regional championship.

In the upset of No. 3-seed Fall River, Maggie Godfrey had 18 points, 14 rebounds, six assist and five blocks to pace the Orioles. Teammate Grace Ganshert finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, while Hannah Gierhart added 12 points.

In the win over BCC, the Orioles held a moderate 6-point lead at halftime. The second half was a different story, with the defense forcing turnovers and the offense lighting up the scoreboard. Over the final 18 minutes of the game, Argyle outscored BCC by 25 points, 37-12.

Ganshert had 24 points, 11 rebounds and three steals for Argyle. She is averaging nearly 20 points per game this season and is now just six away from 1,000 in her career. Godfrey finished the night with 13 points, five rebounds and five assists. Jenna Allison had eight points, with Alyssa Stadola scoring seven and Gierhart six.

The Orioles have missed star forward Tori Lantz all season, but the athletic Ganshert has moved from guard to forward for large portions of games this season.

The senior-laden Orioles squad, led by former Black Hawk and UW-Green Bay star Jen Wellnitz, will now have a try at another program first — reaching the sectional final.

Before that, though, they must overcome Six Rivers East champion Albany (22-4), which beat Argyle by double digits in both previous matchups this year. The game is set to be played at a neutral site, with Sun Prairie High School the destination on March 3.

The winner will advance to the sectional final — the final game before state — for a March 5 date against either top-ranked Randolph (27-0) or Oakfield (22-5) at Central Wisconsin Christian in Waupun.
