No. 4 Argyle-Pec knocks off No. 2 Albany-Monticello

ARGYLE — In a battle for the top spot in the Six Rivers East, Argyle-Pecatonica defeated Albany-Monticello 55-47 on Thursday, Jan. 4. With the victory, the Orioles remain undefeated in conference play and handed the Comets their first loss of the season. In fact, it was Albany’s first conference loss since Dec. 9, 2021 — a 25-game conference winning streak.

Argyle-Pecatonica, ranked No. 4 in Division 5*, used its pressure defense to record 15 steals and force 23 turnovers against Albany-Monticello, ranked No. 2 in Division 5.

Loretta Tisch and Brooke Wellnitz led the Orioles with 15 points each. With 10 rebounds, Wellnitz also had a double-double. Kylie Butler also finished in double figures with 13 points.

Abby Hollis paced the Comets with 11 points, including a pair of threes. Dalana Trumpy also finished in double figures with 10 points. Alana Durtschi, who scored eight points, led on the boards with nine rebounds.

ARGYLE-PECATONICA 61, CAMBRIDGE 51

CAMBRIDGE — Wellnitz recorded a triple double in a nonconference win over the Bluejays on Saturday, Jan. 6.

Wellnitz had a team-high 12 rebounds and 10 steals with 20 points. Butler led the offense with 24 points. 

Argyle-Pecatonica has not lost since their season opener against Belleville, where the team was missing Wellnitz and Avari Steiner. 

RANDOLPH 47, ALBANY-MONTICELLO 34

RANDOLPH — The Comets suffered their second ranked loss of the week on Saturday, Jan. 6. The Rockets, ranked No. 3 in Division 5, have just two losses on the season. Those losses come to Laconia, No. 1 in Division 4, and Westfield, No. 10 in Division 4.

Hollis was the only Comet in double figures with 13 points, including a pair of threes. As a team, Albany-Monticello was 3-for-13 from 3-point range.

NEW GLARUS 72, WISCONSIN HEIGHTS 31

MAZOMANIE — Thirteen Knights played in a Capitol South Conference win for New Glarus on Friday, Jan. 5.

Lindsey Schadewalt led the team with 27 points and 14 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season. Anya Brenkman also finished in double figures with 10 points, including a pair of threes.

New Glarus, ranked No. 9 in Division 4, is tied with Cambridge in the Capitol South Conference standings with two wins apiece.

NEW GLARUS 82, POYNETTE 61

NEW GLARUS — The Knights limited the Pumas to just 19 points in the second half en route to a comeback victory on Saturday, Jan. 6.

Schadewalt upped her career high to 40 points, going 18-for-21 from the free throw line with a pair of threes. She also grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds. Elle Lancaster (12) and Brenkman (11) also finished in double figures.

Schadewalt is just 49 points away from 2,000 in her career. She is likely to reach this mark in New Glarus’s home game against Cambridge on Tuesday, Jan. 16. She would join Allie Ziebell of Neenah, Teagan Mallegni of McFarland and Sydney Cherney of Reedsburg who scored their 2,000th points earlier this season.

BLACK HAWK 64, EVANSVILLE 56

SOUTH WAYNE — Facing a 12-point deficit at halftime, the Warriors doubled up the Blue Devils in the second frame in a nonconference game on Thursday, Jan. 4.

Black Hawk, a Division 5 team, had four players in double figures — Maddy Lange (18), Maddy Place (17), Kendra Haldiman (13) and Hailey Wellnitz (12). With 10 rebounds, Wellnitz also recorded a double-double. Mya Milz, who scored four points, also grabbed 10 rebounds. 

Evansville, a Division 3 team, had three players in double figures. Only four Blue Devils scored.

DARLINGTON 48, FENNIMORE 33

FENNIMORE — The Redbirds (5-0) took sole possession of the top spot in the SWAL with a win over Fennimore (3-2) on Thursday, Jan. 4.

Second-chance points and points off turnovers was the name of the game for Darlington. The Redbirds forced 16 turnovers and stole the ball eight times, leading to 15 points. With 13 offensive rebounds, they scored another 12 points.

Sadie Goebel led the team with 18 points, and Maddie Gratz chipped in 10 points. Aubrey McCarthy, who scored nine points, grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.

HIGHLAND 56, DARLINGTON 53

HIGHLAND — The Division 5 Cardinals defeated the Division 4 Redbirds in a nonconference contest on Saturday, Jan. 6. 

Gratz paced Darlington with 19 points, 12 of which were from beyond the arc. McCarthy chipped in 10 points. Jaidyn Evenstad grabbed a team-best six rebounds with five assists and four deflections.

BRODHEAD 76, JUDA 18

JUDA — The Cardinals limited the Panthers to single digits in the second half en route to a nonconference victory on Thursday, Jan. 4.

Addison Yates led Brodhead’s offense with 18 points. Allie Dahl also finished in double figures with 15 points. Onnikah Williams grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.
