FENNIMORE — The Black Hawk-Warren co-op scored a major win in convincing fashion in the opening week of the prep football season. The Warriors toppled Fennimore 38-7 in a nonconference game Aug. 23. Fennimore spent much of the 2018 season ranked in the state and is one of the favorites to win the SWAL this fall.

Black Hawk-Warren opened with a lead of 8-0 after the first quarter and 22-0 at halftime. Fennimore scored its only touchdown in the third quarter.

Cody Blosch led the Warriors with 132 rushing yards on 11 carries. Cayden Milz had 102 yards on the ground with a pair of touchdowns for BHW, while Jaylen Rufenacht had 50 yards on six carries. Ethan Williams was 2 for 4 passing for 82 yards with two touchdowns and a rushing score. Rufenacht had a 31-yard TD catch, and Brady Hagen added a 51-yard score. Milz and Lucas Flanagan each had interceptions for the Warriors, which travel to Cuba City in Week 2.

New Glarus-Monticello 42, Dodgeville 7

NEW GLARUS — The Glarner Knights opened their season on a roll. 

Moments into the first quarter, Mason Martinson hauled in a 30-yard touchdown pass from Darris Schuett to give NGM a 7-0 lead. Dodgeville tied it up midway through the second quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by RJ Vineberg, but it was the last time the Dodgers would score.

Schuett scored on an 8-yard run with 5:57 left in the second quarter, and with 49 ticks left on the clock before halftime, NGM got another score — a 13-yard pass from Schuett to Josh Wieser.

Connor Siegenthaler scored from a yard out in the third quarter, and then hauled in a 36-yard touchdown pass from Schuett moments into the fourth quarter. Martinson added a 29-yard run later in the fourth.

The Knights outgained the Dodgers in yardage 507-175. Schuett was 19 of 33 passing, while gaining 101 yards on nine carries. Siegenthaler had 60 yards rushing on six carries, and 100 yards receiving on four catches. Nathan Streiff had 10 catches for 135 yards for NGM.

Lancaster 14, Pecatonica-Argyle 0

BLANCHARDVILLE — The Vikings took an early 7-0 lead on the Arrows in Week 1, but couldn’t reach pay dirt again.

Mason Waage took an interception 47 yards to the house less than 3 minutes into the game to give Pecatonica-Argyle the lead. Less than two minutes later, Corey Hahn scored on a 64-yard run to tie the game. Lancaster scored for the final time with 1:04 left in the first half.

Clay Ritschard led the Vikings with 73 rushing yards on 15 carriers. The Vikings were 0-for-10 passing. Hahn had 223 yards on the ground for Lancaster.

Pecatonica-Argyle hosts Iowa-Grant in Week 2.


Evansville 48, Brodhead-Juda 19

EVANSVILLE — The Cardinals turned the ball over three times and allowed more than 400 yards of offense in a Week 1 loss to the Blue Devils.

Evansville took a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter, but then put four touchdowns on the board in the second. The Cardinals made it 34-6 at halftime thanks to a 4-yard touchdown run by Braden Cook.

Brodhead-Juda’s Cade Walker finished the game 17 of 35 passing for 251 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Seven different Cardinals carried the ball, with none gaining more than 25 yards. Brodhead-Juda had 113 yards total on the ground. Connor Green had six catches for 168 yards and a touchdown, while Nick Naramore had six grabs for 56 yards and a score.

Tyre Severson was 9 of 12 passing for 256 yards and four TDs for Evansville. Sully Geske had three catches for 73 yards and a score, while Jaden O’Bel had two touchdown grabs and Carson Hill one. Hill added 54 yards on the ground with two more scores.


Darlington 20, Westby 12

DARLINGTON — The Redbirds kicked off the 2019 season with a bang and a nonconference win.

Parker Fitzsimons took the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown, and the Redbirds made it 14-0 later in the first quarter when Caden Rankin recovered a fumble for a touchdown.

Westby made it 14-6 by the end of the first quarter. 

In the third quarter, Fitzsimons scored on a 66-yard dash to make it 20-6. Westby added another score in the fourth quarter but couldn’t get any closer.

Fitzsimons and Wyat Bredeson each had 70 yards rushing in the game for the Redbirds, while teammate Hunter Hardyman hauled in a 48-yard catch from Braden Davis.
