Monroe towers over Luther Prep

MONROE — The Cheesemakers defeated Watertown Luther Prep 6-1 on April 22.

“We beat them last year 4-3 with some incredibly tight matches, so I was expecting tonight to be a really competitive match again,” said Monroe coach Matt Bordner. “We came out and played excellent tennis to start the match. We focused on getting off to quick starts in practice so it was nice to see that pay off. It was a physical brand of tennis from both sides, especially as Luther Prep stepped up in the second sets.”

Matthew Setterstrom dominated at No. 1 singles, winning 6-0, 6-1 against William Olson.

“Matthew played his best match of his career, beating Olson convincingly after narrowly beating him last year in a super tiebreaker,” Bordner said.

The difficulty level was turned up a notch in the doubles, as Monroe’s top tandem of Carsen Bartholf and Hamilton Stites edged out Xander Wrobel and Levi Foxen 6-2, 5-7, 10-8.

“Carsen and Hamilton also picked up a huge win against a really strong No. 1 doubles team,” Bordner said.

Monroe (6-2, 2-0 RVC) hits the court next on April 29 at Delavan-Darien.
