MONROE — The Cheesemakers hosted a four-team doubles tournament on Thursday, Aug. 17, an event that is a staple of the Monroe tennis program. Although Monroe went 0-3 on the day, head coach Matt Bordner acknowledges his team’s challenges and saw the tournament as a stepping stone for the rest of the season.

“This has been a fun tournament we’ve brought back to Monroe,” Bordner said. “We had a tough day today, but with an inexperienced team, we expected to have some challenges against stronger schools like Baraboo, Oregon, and Milton. Our girls played tough and picked up games in many matches, and I think we can walk away feeling good about our progress with plenty to work on moving forward.”

In the match against Baraboo, 1A partners Kate Kundert and Lindsay Leuzinger — the top two singles players — snagged the lone win. They came from behind in both sets, including a tiebreaker in the second set.

“Kate and Lindsay paired up and picked up a very impressive win over a very good Baraboo team,” Bordner said. “They fought back from behind in both sets and the win was really nice for their confidence moving forward.”

Oregon blanked Monroe 5-0 in the second match. The Panthers didn’t lose a single match all day en route to their tournament win.

Katrina Sathoff and Chyler Blackburn picked up a straight-set win against Milton, the only win for Monroe.

“Katrina and Chyler clicked really well and picked up a nice win at No. 4 doubles for us,” Bordner said. “Milton’s serves were strong and they played a nice round to finish the day.”
